John Guthrie
John Guthrie’s work explores the expansive possibilities of abstraction through reverberant color, precise compositions, and intractable geometric forms. Over the past thirty years, Guthrie has created numerous series informed by his design background in aerospace engineering and early experiences coming out as a gay man. Embracing a multiplicity of perspectives, his paintings often shift in color and dimension while forms oscillate between abstraction, figuration, and the symbolic. In recent years, Guthrie has found kinship in Queer Abstraction, an emerging movement that highlights how queer experiences are expressed in nonrepresentational art, past and present. This new lens encapsulates the breadth of Guthrie’s practice and encourages an abundance of meanings to coexist.
Guthrie has exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions. He has shown in Boston, New York, Dallas, Toronto, and Como, Italy, among other cities. Guthrie’s work has been reviewed by the Boston Globe, Arts + Culture Magazine, Art New England, and Abstraks Magazine. He has received awards from the City of Boston, New England Foundation for the Arts, and Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.
